This study documented an indirect link between siblings' self-presentations to peers and development of externalizing and internalizing symptoms through academiccompetence. Peer-directed selfpresentations, in turn, forecast internalizing symptoms for both siblings through its association with academiccompetence. The clustering was based on three seventh grade variables: academiccompetence beliefs, academic values, and emotional functioning as reported by the youth. Reactive control and resiliency did not contribute to the development of academiccompetence, actually worsening model fit by their inclusion.
