The higher the educational level of a woman of a particular age, the lower her chance of marrying into a polygynous union. In the young and intermediate age groups, mean fertility of women in polygynous marriages is higher than that of women in monogamous marriages. Thus, simulations can assist in the design of empirical research on several aspects of genetic parentage in species with polygynous or polyandrous mating systems. However, most of this difference was due to the higher ages of women in polygynous unions. This may be partly explained by the fact that infertile or subfertile women do not seem to be selectively concentrated in polygynous unions. At the other extreme are the traditionalists who favour very large families: the farmers, the illiterate, the polygynous, and the aged. Australian foragers, on the other hand, were highly polygynous, with old men sometimes having up to 10 wives. They consisted of one or several polygynous households in which the wives lived in settlements chosen by their husbands, a practice called virilocal residence. It is the very low rates of usage of those in polygynous marriages which depress the rates for the married as a whole. The present data do not support the suggestion that a higher proportion of women in polygynous unions are childless. One-third of the wives aged below 25 were in polygynous unions while two-thirds of those aged above 45 were in such unions. Of these, 366 were in monogamous and 174 in polygynous unions. These individuals, dependants in polygynous extended-family households, predominate among those who engage in labour prestation and bear the burden of so-called reciprocal labour. The proportion of childless wives was 11% for women in monogamous unions and 6% for women in polygynous unions. Polygynous marriages of the elite and rural lineage heads would be a logical extension of a patrifocal, endogamous organization, especially if female labor was a significant aspect of the economy. This paper investigates differentials in fertility levels between women in monogamous unions and those in polygynous unions using mean number of children ever born as the measure of fertility. |
