a tall, deciduous tree (= one that loses its leaves in autumn and grows new ones in the spring) with a very hard wood:
Black locusts are native to the eastern USA and especially Appalachia but are now grown in many different countries.
The bugs are partial to hardwoods - maple, poplar, willow, elm, ash, and black locust.
