Compare bilateralism Examples of multilateralismmultilateralism In a nutshell, we arrive at a paradox of multilateralism. The word multilateralism headed the original conference title but did not make it onto the book cover. Regionalism is thus presented as the standard case in global economic integration between the two extremes of unilateral liberalization and complete multilateralism. The need for multilateralism actually rests upon a dispersal of sanctioning power, which leaves single countries powerless. Some readers will also be troubled by the emphasis on bilateralism over multilateralism. There is another argument why multilateralism can foster regionalism, in the sense that regionalism emerges precisely from progress in multilateralism. In particular, the strong emphasis on solidarity with its allies was consistent with the norms of multilateralism. Thus, multilateralism and regionalist policies evolve in tandem. It is a valuable contribution to discussions of the possibilities and limitations of multilateralism in the region. Interestingly, this means that multilateralism and regionalism are by no means substitutes but may be complements if growing trade is accompanied with increasing specific investments into market access. This complementary role of regionalism and multilateralism is further strengthened by the role of regionalist policies in achieving power balances across countries in the negotiation process. The issue is not between a free and anarchic multilateralism on the one hand, and a wise planning of trading areas on the other. From the Hansard archive Example from the Hansard archive.
