Indeed, they argue that this preoccupation leads us, as gerontologists, to perpetuate the very conditions that we abhor. I recognise that not all gerontologists are particularly concerned with the social condition of those they study. Since the 1960s or perhaps even before, gerontologists have been developing conceptual frameworks or schema to describe ideal outcomes of the aging process. It is a vital message for social gerontologists but perhaps one which will not be welcomed unequivocally. Most gerontologists will probably seek to develop their own impressions based upon a reading of the entire text. Both feminists and gerontologists are concerned with groups that suffer from multiple inequalities. For gerontologists this book bridges oral history and cultural studies. Three main illustrative chapters focus on older age directly and these prove useful in drawing gerontologists in to the complexities of the theoretical discussions. The author writes as a feminist, a gerontologist and a social worker. Since it is concerned with claimants of all ages, the average gerontologist will have to work fairly hard to find the desired information. Over the past three decades gerontologists have paid increasing attention to the experience of friendship in old age. Social gerontologists often seek viable alternatives to the image of older people as failing organisms or passive victims of biological fate and social discrimination. The other type of review included in this volume is more appealing to the social gerontologist. Two of these chapters are of particular interest to social gerontologists. Similarly, he observes a greater political awareness among the elderly and gerontologists, accompanying a stronger political stand. Research that aims to unveil culturally-relevant knowledge about successful ageing ought to interest not only cross-cultural gerontologists but also those involved in social policy. This experience has no precedent - it is a social moment whose significance social gerontologists and social scientists generally have barely grasped.
