Elephantdung is both an ephemeral and patchy resource present mainly in the late dry season. For germination trials, seeds were collected from fresh elephantdung (passed) and fresh fruits (unpassed) and planted in seedling cups filled with soil. More germination occurred in elephantdung than in soil for both ingested and fresh seeds. Additionally, growth was more vigorous in elephantdung than in forest soil. However, these projections were based on the assumption that seed predation in elephantdung is constant over time and space. It is possible that our study underestimated the number of seed species consumed by elephants since we examined elephantdung in situ. The elephantdung may also have provided a medium richer in nutrients than ordinary forest soil. We did not find any evidence of seed foraging of elephantdung by vertebrates, but several species of dung beetle were commonly found. Growth rates of seedlings from ingested seeds were higher than those from fresh ripe fruits especially in elephantdung. Seeds placed on top of the soil rarely germinated, while seeds covered with elephantdung or buried under the soil surface had a germination success between 23- 43%. Germination success observed in elephantdung was not significantly different from that in forest soil. Acacia erioloba, and c. 5% were on elephantdung during the late dry and early wet seasons. He observed a few elephants trampling dry elephantdung underfoot. From Wikipedia This example is from Wikipedia and may be reused under a CC BY-SA license.
