A cork borer was used to remove five discs from each leaf, avoiding areas with large veins. Among 75 plant species found infested, 51 of them had never been reported as hosts of stem borers. Endosulfan granules were applied to maize to control stalk borer. The number of stalks showing borer damage, as indicated by bored internodes, was recorded. It is believed that cyclones exert an influence in decreasing the number of parasites, thereby producing sporadic outbreaks of borers in some localities. The present study provides for the first time a general overview on the host range of the different lepidopteran stem borer families. With varieties susceptible to these diseases, it would be preferable simply to select for planting tops free from borer damage. These results indicate that the leaf-section bioassay can be used to detect differences in stem borer resistance among untransformed and transgenic rice plants.
