These networks are used to reveal trends in the evolution of different serotypes, monitor their antimicrobialsusceptibility, detect outbreaks, and contribute to their investigation. It is known that identical antimicrobialsusceptibility is not a reliable marker of strain identity. Monitoring of antimicrobialsusceptibility through a surveillance programme is recommended to select appropriate antibiotics for the effective treatment of shigellosis in this region. Antimicrobialsusceptibility profiles to erythromycin and ciprofloxacin were done by disk diffusion. Isolates were characterized by serotyping, phage typing and antimicrobialsusceptibility. Antimicrobialsusceptibility patterns were not considered in the selection of isolates. Resistance was confirmed by further antimicrobialsusceptibility testing. In the period 2001-2003, a total of 413 broiler isolates, 343 from cloacal samples and 70 from broiler meat products, were tested for antimicrobialsusceptibility. Prompt notification of antimicrobialsusceptibility results may aid physicians in appropriate antimicrobial use. Of 228 isolates tested for antimicrobialsusceptibility, 113 (49.6 %) were resistant to at least one antimicrobial, whereas 55 (24.1 %) were resistant to four or more antimicrobials (multi-drug resistant). Case-control studies and case series were included if they described at least 25 cases and utilized standard methods for serotyping and antimicrobialsusceptibility testing.
