It became a nature reserve in 1965 and is now an important conservation site serving as a refuge for several endemicspecies. Sixty-six bird species were recorded, of which 21 were endemicspecies. Furthermore, within the forest, the abundance of most endemicspecies was greater than the abundance of related non-endemicspecies. This highlights the vulnerability of endemicspecies to forest conversion. The total abundance of endemicspecies in the four habitat types (276 individuals) was somewhat lower than that of the non-endemicspecies (349 individuals). Of the forest habitats, the unlogged sites, where all five endemicspecies occurred, had a higher diversity of endemic species than the selectively logged sites that had four. Forest regenerating on formerly cultivated ground has a comparatively low diversity and no endemicspecies. The endemicspecies selectively utilized sites within the forest whilst the majority of the other taxa used both forest and non-forest habitat types or were restricted to the latter. The findings suggest that the forest-dwelling endemicspecies of both small mammal and bird encounter difficulties in tolerating modified landscapes, whilst other taxa are less affected. Trials have indicated that ebony and other endemicspecies can contribute towards this. From the Hansard archive Example from the Hansard archive.
