Some of these examples may show the adjective use. It feeds on the phloem in leaf sheaths, causing wilting and drying of the leaves. Early wilting should then lead to higher drought survival, which is contrary to our findings. Severe wilting will cause fruit to feel spongy and beans may become desiccated. The correlations were robust to different timings of the assessments, and to differences in the categorization of wilting (data not shown). Other traits measured occasionally are lodging resistance, reaction to diseases, cold damage and wilting due to drought stress. Half of the experimental unit was then left without water until severe wilting was observed. These activities bring about a very premature wilting and death of the leaves which reflects seriously upon the food storage process within the bulb. Hence, we expected to find a rather complex relationship between wilting and leaf water potentials. Wilting under drought stress is a very commonly observed phenomenon, and indeed is probably the most widely used indicator of plant drought stress. Rather, the rhythmic ostinato that accompanies her wilting melody reminds us that she is trapped and powerless to escape. The general approach can be applied for a wide range of species and conditions, and specific wilting categories can be defined as appropriate. However, to our knowledge, no studies have explicitly examined the relationship between wilting and leaf water potentials or drought survival. This was due in part to the reduced radiation beneath the shelters and the absence of wilting. As the drought progressed, leaf water potentials () of the dipterocarp saplings remained relatively high, while leaf wilting was observed for some adjacent non-dipterocarp species. Soyabeans in all treatments were furrow-irrigated with approximately 2.5 cm water whenever incipient wilting occurred during the growing season.
