a college athlete (= person who is very good at sports) who was not officially asked to join a team before the start of a season but who is able to join the team later, usually because they have shown they have enough skills in a test of their ability:

She is a former walk-on who will be the most experienced returning player.
They received little playing time as walk-ons.
She joined the basketball team as a walk-on.
He was a walk-on quarterback at Wake Forest University.
