释义 | vermiculite noun[ U ] uk /vəˈmɪk.jə.laɪt/ us /vɚˈmɪk.jə.laɪt/ a mineral that can absorb water and is used for many purposes, including in industry, building, and when growing plants: Sow the seeds half a centimetre deep in a tray of vermiculite. Vermiculite is a naturally occurring substance that was once commonly used in insulation and potting soils. Decades of vermiculite mining released toxic asbestos in the area that has been linked to hundreds of deaths and cases of illness. To grow salad vegetables indoors you will need some seed compost or, better still, vermiculite. However, these pretreatment conditions are unnatural and essentially provide starvation conditions for the microbes as vermiculite is totally lacking in nutrients. Both groups were sowed in plastic trays (37 x 28 cm) containing regularly moistened vermiculite. Each subsample was put into germination pots, in thin 1 cm layers separated from a vermiculite base by sterile gauze. The addition of a sterile compost activator (a source of inorganic nutrients) to the vermiculite and seed mix resulted in greatly increased germination (95.2%). Equivalent seed batches were mixed with dry vermiculite and similarly maintained as the control material. A thin layer of moistened vermiculite covered the bottom of the vials and served as a pupation substrate for the emerging parasitoid larvae. The clay mineralogy of this soil is dominated by kaolin (65+80%) with sub-dominant illite (10+20%) and vermiculite (1+5%). About 15 seeds of each of the plant genotypes were planted in vermiculite in separate pots. The nursery plants were planted into trays with vermiculite and were watered daily. On each occasion, the vermiculite was sieved, numbers of wandering larvae and pupae counted, and pupae transferred to emergence cages containing water and sugar. The plants were subsequently transplanted twice into 5-litre then 15-litre pots containing vermiculite, sand and gravel in the ratio 4:1:1. At time of planting, soil was evenly mixed 1 : 3 : 3 soil : sterile sand : vermiculite (approx. 14% inoculum). This is consistent with the presence of vermiculite which is an alteration product of chlorite in a humid and cold climate without soil formation. The commercial (control) treatment was based on moist vermiculite and seed (10:1 w/w vermiculite/seed). These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
