to cause pain


These verbs and phrases are used to say that something causes feelings of physical pain.

If you have a pain in a particular part of your body, you can say that it hurts. You can also say that an injury or movement hurts.


My leg hurts.
That cut looks nasty - does it hurt?
It hurts when I move by neck.

If the pain in a part of your body is continuous and unpleasant but not very strong, you can say that it aches. If the pain seems to come in regular beats, you can say that it throbs.


My legs are still aching from my run yesterday.

If your skin or eyes sting or smart, they hurt with a sharp pain.

In informal contexts, you can say that a part of your body is killing you if it is very painful. You can also say that something you wear, especially shoes, are killing you.


My back's killing me after all that gardening.
These shoes are killing me!
