释义

not able to be achieved

These words and phrases describe things that are not able to be done or achieved.

One common word for this is impossible.

There's no way we'll be able to get the paperwork done in time – it's impossible.
It's impossible to make the car safely do something it wasn't designed to do.

The opposite of impossible is possible.

"Can we put in another row of cabinets?" "Yeah, that's possible."

For more opposites of impossible, see the article at achievable.

If something you want is unachievable or unattainable, you cannot achieve it. Both words are often used with unrealistic to emphasize that the thing you want is not possible to achieve.

There is no point in setting unachievable goals for yourself.
She has completely unrealistic and unachievable targets for her sales staff.
These bodybuilders are chasing an unattainable ideal – they'll never be as muscular as they want.
Being independently wealthy is an unattainable dream for most people.

If something is unfeasible or, in US English, infeasible, it cannot be done or achieved because it is not practical or realistic.

It would be unfeasible to try to ban all petrol vehicles at the moment.
The company has promised a fully self-driving car in a year, but engineers say it is technically infeasible.

You can also say that a plan is unworkable or impracticable. Both impracticable and unworkable are used especially to describe things that would not be effective or successful if they were done.

Their proposal to increase the minimum wage to £30 an hour was criticized as being unworkable.
It would be impracticable to require that the entire country's population be vaccinated.

 Usage

Do not confuse impracticable with impractical. Impractical is used to describe things that can be done or achieved successfully, though not easily. Impracticable describes things that cannot or should not be done.

His invention sounded interesting, though it was impracticable given it defied the law of gravity.

Not: His invention sounded interesting though it was impractical given it defied the law of gravity

There are many informal ways to say that something cannot be done or achieved. No way is used to say that a goal cannot be achieved. If something is a no go or is no go, then it cannot be done and would not be effective if you did try to do it. You can also say that something that is done but will not succeed does not have a snowball's chance in hell. This last phrase is very informal.

Given all their injuries, there's no way that Chelsea are going to be contenders this season.
The launch was a no go because of bad weather.
It's no go, mate – they're not interested in buying your motorbike.
Don't tell him I said this, but his proposal doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell.
He can stand as a candidate, but he won't have a snowball's chance in hell of winning the election.
