The degree of resistance to penicillin and tetracycline varied. We found six ciprofloxacin-resistant imported campylobacters and only 1 of 9 tetracycline-resistant isolates was also resistant to ciprofloxacin. All isolates were screened for susceptibility to penicillin, gentamicin, tobramycin, kanamycin [9], erythromycin, clindamycin, ciprofloxacin, vancomycin, teicoplanin, rifampin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, and trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole. Isolates were also tested for susceptibility to erythromycin, sulphamethoxazole-trimethoprim, tetracycline, gentamicin, fusidic acid, rifampicin, ciprofloxacin, chloramphenicol and vancomycin. There was no effect of tetracycline, which does not cross the blood-brain barrier, on performance or survival. Of the penicillin resistant isolates approximately 10 % were also resistant to tetracycline. |
