释义 | syncytium noun[ C ] anatomy specializeduk /sɪnˈsɪt.i.əm/ us /sɪnˈsɪʃ.əm//sɪnˈsɪʃ.i.əm/pluralsyncytiauk /sɪnˈsɪt.i.ə/ us /sɪnˈsɪʃ.ə//sɪnˈsɪʃ.i.ə/ a mass of protoplasm(= liquid inside living cells) that contains many nuclei(= the part of cells that control growth) that are not divided into separate cells: Infection with these two viruses formed syncytia that were 2.7 times larger. Syncytia are multinucleated cells that arise through the fusion of uninuclear cells. Within 3 days after infection, changes include swelling and induction of multinucleated cells or syncytia. A syncytium may arise from the fusion of cells, or, as in striated muscle fibres, it may be due to the multiplication of nuclei in an undivided mass of protoplasm. Another mechanism for T4 cell destruction may be explained by the formation of syncytia or massive bodies consisting of many merged cells having multinuclei.
