The debate reflected the fact that a number of investigators had observed connections between putrefaction and fermentation and life processes. They argued that germs were a peculiar sort of chemical agent that played the role of independent biochemical agents in processes of fermentation and putrefaction. It had been shown that the same means of destroying the growth of microorganisms (through heat or chemicals) often inhibited putrefaction and fermentation as well. Thus, the putrefaction that he observed to occur did very probably result from the presence of living beings of very small magnitude. The research on putrefaction and fermentation took place in a context layered with contested issues. Put simply, there were two different views about the "organic" status of putrefaction and fer mentation. He showed that fermentation does indeed seem to require organisms, yeast cells, and that putrefaction is very closely tied with the dynamics of such processes. Further, his own presentation suggests he saw clearly that his results did not show definitively the fundamental cause of putrefaction itself. Further, one can introduce putrefaction by allowing a material sample to come into contact with putrefying fluids or vapors. The putrefaction occurred in these cases in the enclosed substance almost as quickly as in one not sealed-off. On the contrary : the putrefaction of deeds asserted over grace its own remorseless alchemy. Helmholtz says, rather, that putrefaction can subsist (bestehen) independently of life processes, but is altered in its appearance or form by such processes. Showing that some life-like processes such as putrefaction did not depend upon organisms would not support the generalization that no living processes essentially depend upon "irreducible" organismic processes. The research on putrefaction and fermentation is an example of his early research and represents a topic to which he devoted little attention in his later career.
