Farmers were also asked the length of time they kept panicles in the field before threshing and how they were kept. Samples of 20 m2 were harvested separately from each millet row parallel to the windbreaks and divided into millet panicles and stover. We asked whether computational analysis would be useful for the representation of panicle topology and asynchronous and differential processes involved with ripening. Because vestiges were not considered, the nodal distributions of panicle traits only approximate actual panicle differentiation. Computational annotation of the panicle array is a solution to this problem. Each plant was labelled with its flowering date when pollen had been released by florets from the upper two-thirds of the panicle. Sets 4-6 each contained eight panicles that emerged first, third and fifth respectively, and were harvested at maturity. Also, heaping panicles at a common threshing point for days before threshing may result in the shedding and loss of grains. This ideotype emphasized inter alia moderate tillering and height, and long but thick and erect final three leaves displayed well above a drooping panicle. Data were collected on grain and biomass yields, day-to-head, plant height and panicle length. Six panicles for each plant of the two populations were observed and averaged for the spikelet fertility score. In this way, a consensus array, which smoothes out panicle-topanicle variation, can be determined. Harvested panicles were dried at room temperature to a constant weight before they were analysed. Positive heterosis for grain yield was not strongly associated with positive heterosis for either panicle number or grain yield per panicle, however (data not shown). Our method for decomposing the panicle involves arraying grains in order on 96-well plates according to rules for skipping wells. After harvest, they judge good yield by the number of panicle bundles or the number of containers filled with panicles. Ripening, the process after double fertilization by which the caryopsis matures within the grain, varies with position on the panicle. Of the total biomass produced, approximately 15% is food (millet grain) and 85% can be regarded as potential feed (millet leaves, stalks and threshed panicles). On the other hand moisture stress during this period might cause a reduction in both panicle length and grain size. |
