The vertebral or neural arch is formed by the two pedicles, two laminae, and spinous process. Various factors are thought to be responsible for the unfused neural arches and associated spinal cord defects. Ossification of the mandible, vertebral bodies, and neural arches occurs at around nine weeks' gestation. In about 1% of cases, these tumours become symptomatic, causing neural arch expansion.
