This was because of increased labor requirements for additional or different farm operations, such as planting within mulched fields, fertilizer application and weeding. This was attributed to poor plant water utilization, and higher drainage losses in the bare plots, in the three years, than in the mulched plots. The use of irrigation masked possible differences in soil moisture content that can occur between nonmulched and mulched soils. This suggests that vigorous plants in mulched systems supported more larvae than the stunted plants in intercrops. Yield reductions, reported as t ha 1, were twice as high in the mulched system as in the intercrop. Plant growth was consistently higher and yields were 76% greater in mulched than in intercropped stands. However, it had no effect on millet grown in previously mulched soil. Crops in mulched plots utilized more water than their counterparts on bare plots in all the three years. In this time period, however, the weevil population in mulched plots remained at 94% of the release levels and increased steadily thereafter (table 2). Potassium content decreased slightly with depth in the mulched treatment only. However, the total amount of tissue consumed was greater in mulched banana than in other systems. In our experiment, the regenerative capacity of thistles was considerably lower than that of clover when ryegrass- clover ley was mowed and/or mulched. High stress (intercropped) banana had a mean height of 185 cm, compared to moderate stress (215 cm), low stress (218 cm) and high vigour (mulched) (251 cm) bananas.
