The fibres of the optic nerve receive their medullary sheaths in about the tenth week after birth. These are associated with a disturbance of the conduction mechanism resulting from changes in the medullary sheath. The medullary sheath consists of fat and neurokeratin. The nerve fibre, on approaching the muscular fibre, suddenly loses its medullary sheath.
