When producing an utterance, a speaker's illocutionary intention is his intention to perform some illocutionary act(s) in uttering those words. The interaction model includes the speech (illocutionary) acts and the sequencing of the messages. For this purpose, a coding scheme was developed that contained 14 operationally-defined illocutionary features that were mutually exclusive (one category per utterance). An appropriate reaction, therefore, must include a response to the indirect illocutionary force. A communicative plan, that is, a complex illocutionary act, can be accomplished through many possible different locutionary acts. That would mean that these expressions are not after all being analysed as illocutionary force indicators, but are being treated as indicators of something propositional. So at the very least the primary illocutionary intention of the speaker should not always matter. I then remark that quite different considerations than these will be required to determine whether illocutionary actions are a species of non-transitive revelation. In bilinguals, the illocutionary intention may be to express oneself in one language rather than the other, or to mix languages. Therefore, these choices of illocutionary force are not mapped into syntactic structure. They have traditionally an illocutionary function which points out their role in the exchange. Against them he appeals to the distinction in speech-act theory between locutionary acts (uttering, inscribing) and illocutionary acts (asserting, commanding, promising, and so forth). Imperative illocutionary force or ' logical mood ' is not attenuated by the use of the ' formal ' rather than the ' intimate ' form of address. Both the poet and the theologian want to attribute illocutionary acts to ' subjects ' lacking the equipment for the normally associated locutionary acts.
