in American football, an arrangement of players on the field that goes against the rules and results in a penalty :
The offence was called for an illegal formation because they didn't have seven players lined up on the line of scrimmage.
The referee called an illegal formation because the tight end was not on the line of scrimmage.
During punts and kicks, it is an illegal formation if the defence has more than six players on the line of scrimmage on either side of the ball.
