Totalbiomass was measured to determine the productivity of each cropping system. Totalbiomass accumulation was also higher in plants which experienced stress in the vegetative phase. The response in biomass was limited to the legume component, although totalbiomass increased in at least one of the two years. The average totalbiomass production was about 1 t ha-1 lower than in 1996. Although significant differences were found in totalbiomass, the species composition remains mainly constant during the year. However, volume-based biomass estimates will underestimate totalbiomass when forest components other than large trees are common. Of the totalbiomass produced, approximately 15% is food (millet grain) and 85% can be regarded as potential feed (millet leaves, stalks and threshed panicles). Relative competitive performance is the per cent reduction in totalbiomass due to competitive interactions. Straw yield was obtained by subtracting grain yield from the totalbiomass. However, such an increase in cultivated area leads to a reduction in fallowing, and totalbiomass declines by 14.5 per cent. We also included the totalbiomass at the time of harvest as a covariate to account for the effects of size on response to treatments. The relationship also suggests that for locations and sowing dates where daylength does not in-uence yield, totalbiomass is a good indicator of yield potential. However, subsoil compaction did not affect the totalbiomass and plant height. As a result of biocontrol insects, the density (fig. 7a) and totalbiomass (fig. 7b) of parthenium were reduced by 90% and 78%, respectively. However, the straw portion of the totalbiomass harvested was less than that of sole teff alone. During the 2000/2001 season, the negative effect of compaction was observed on all yield components except totalbiomass and the 1000-grain weight. Their modest totalbiomass does not do justice to their potential ecological impact. These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
