They are secondarily influenced by the physiologically forced postponement of childbearing by some stillbirth-prone women. Perinatal mortality, restricted to number of stillbirths and first week neonatal deaths, obscures t he real extent of loss associated with twin gestations. Such a situation, which might well persist for much or all of the gestation period, could result in a higher number of stillbirths. Disorganized attachment behavior among infants born subsequent to stillbirth. Infant mortality rates from gastro-enteritis and broncho-pneumonia were high and also the stillbirth rate from all causes. The analysis to examine risk factors for stillbirths also excluded twins. For example, severe reduction in food intake in pregnant ewes reduced the birth weight of lambs by about one-third and greatly increased the stillbirth rate. Only one spontaneous stillbirth was identified, continuation of pregnancy to term being the rule. All these women reported that they had had an epidural, as did three others who had a stillbirth-for them the doctors reported pethidine. The fetal risk is the second problem, consisting of stillbirth, prematurity, or recurrence of congenital heart disease in the fetus. Possibly women who have had a stillbirth develop amnesia for some of the events associated with it. They have not been considered separately because of lack of information about many of the stillbirths. Stillbirth rates specific for age-parity combinations have been treated as if their relative values were constant and determined by biological factors. The 1948 data are in respect of women who have had no previous live or stillbirth. Observation of miscarriage and stillbirth led to the conclusion that these events were also consistently under-reported by the women. Socio-economic status is independent of neither risk of stillbirth nor age in pregnancy. These findings combine to frustrate the original aim of estimating the effect of ageing on the risk of stillbirth. The differences in risk of stillbirth between educational classes are not likely to reflect effects of schooling. The stillbirth rate rose with increasing maternal age while postneonatal mortality decreased and neonatal mortality displayed an intermediate pattern. This would now be regarded as an untypical case since stillbirth has been reported only rarely in later more systematic studies. Table 3 presents the stillbirth ratios experienced during second births by the women whose third births occurred in 1968. The observed age-parity specific stillbirth rates are fundamentally determined by the social decisions which determine which women bear their children in the age-parity class.
