When levels of socialtrust in 1993 are regressed on the subsequent (1993-98) democratization (controlling for the levels of economic development), its effect is statistically insignificant. In this section, we assess this thesis at the micro-level by analyzing the relationship between social involvement and socialtrust. It is important to note that the effects of types of social involvement on political activism remain unchanged even after types of socialtrust are controlled. Note that this relationship between these indicators and socialtrust remains strong when a range of controls, including age, are applied. Finally, we relate our findings to other research that has implications for understanding the connections between socialtrust and the quality of democracy across differing political regime types. The effects of socialtrust are nonexistent. By including socialtrust as a separate independent variable, our estimates of the effects of good government are independent of those flowing through higher levels of socialtrust.
