We then review the four modes of user interaction in existing semanticsearch systems, namely keyword-based, form-based, view-based and natural language-based systems. This is challenging for semanticsearch, because the simple presence of two concepts in the same document is not sufficient. Thus, semantic matching mechanisms should be incorporated in the keyword semanticsearch routine. This need for building multimodal semanticsearch tools provides a first dimension in mapping the space that development of systems needs to address. The usability of semanticsearch tools sets the agenda of this review. The semanticsearch environment is potentially complex and large. These observations are commonly outlined in the research field of linguistics and used to develop semanticsearch tools. In this paper, we are interested in semanticsearch and, in particular, the usability of four modes of formulating semantic queries. Keyword-based semanticsearch systems make efforts to enhance the performance of traditional keyword search by exploiting the availability of explicit semantics. The common ontology is used to support more powerful semanticsearch services. We start by presenting an example that motivates the need for semanticsearch. The store is assumed to be the repository of documents indexed by the semanticsearch engine defined above. This requires that semanticsearch systems should be able to support both large-scale ontologies (with many classes and instances) and large-scale repositories (with many annotations). With a common ontology, we can also improve the efficiency of semanticsearch by avoiding too many mappings between ontologies. However, it should be noted that the paper does not represent an exhaustive catalogue of semanticsearch tools. Combining these two dimensions divides the world of semanticsearch systems into four areas. For the example above, semanticsearch tackles the problem in two ways.
