The rock is composed of 20-50 % plagioclase, 30-50 % augite, 1-30 % olivine, 7-30 % magnetite-ilmenite, with trace intercumulus sulphide and brown amphibole. Intrastratal solution and replacement have variably affected detrital hornblende and sometimes augite. Phenocrysts of plagioclase, hornblende and clinopyroxene are embedded in a very fine-grained groundmass of plagioclase laths, fine hornblende prisms, and some biotite and augite crystals. Augite is partially epidotized and olivine grains are partially altered to iddingsite-bowlerite. Clinopyroxene is colourless, granular to sub-ophitic grains of augite. Plagioclase is light, augite gray, and magnetite black. Orthopyroxene occurs as armoured relics within coronas of augite and garnet. Pigeonite crystallizes in the monoclinic system, as does augite, and a miscibility gap exists between the two minerals.
