Positiveadaptation among youth exposed to community violence. In early childhood, one area of positiveadaptation is the development of a secure attachment relationship with the primary caregiver. The first implication is that bilingualism is a positiveadaptation to the environment, beyond increased communicative competence in a second language and greater cultural understanding. Based on their empirical work they describe three inter-related and hierarchical components which they see as central to positiveadaptation : affective, cognitive, and behavioural. We examined two broad themes relevant to externalizing problems and positiveadaptation, namely, aggression toward others and caring for others. Rather, it implies dual references to a life condition (as might the phrase "at-risk youth") and conjointly, evidence of positiveadaptation. Taken as a whole, the extant empirical literature on resilience has traditionally employed behavioral indices of adversity and positiveadaptation. As previously mentioned, resilience is a term connoting positiveadaptation in the face of adversity. In developmental science, resilience usually refers to positiveadaptation during or following exposure to adversities that have the potential to harm development. There may be evidence of atypical processes operating to promote positiveadaptation in some children evincing resilience. Thus, the resiliency of these children was predictable; their rebound toward positiveadaptation was latent in the secure base that preceded the problems of the preschool period. With deeply developmental orientations, these pioneers recognized the importance of trajectories characterized by unexpectedly positiveadaptation or recovery after adversity in the lives of the young people they studied. It is important to note that what is considered a protective factor or mechanism for inhibited children may not lead to positiveadaptation for children who are not inhibited. Furthermore, literature on resilience typically has focused on more contextual risk factors such as poverty or maltreatment and the positiveadaptation that is displayed despite these risks or adversity. A second major difference surrounding definitions is whether resilience should be conceptualized only as positiveadaptation following adversity, or also, as recovery following previous adaptive failures. Longitudinal studies over the transition to adulthood for adolescents assumed to carry considerable risk for adaptive difficulties, such as unwed teenage parents, have revealed surprisingly positiveadaptation. If distinctions between these two constructs can be made both at the neurobiological and behavioral levels, then there would be strong evidence for the distinctiveness of positiveadaptation and resilience. Whether disturbance results depends on the successive combination of liabilities and supports that maintain the individual on a pathway to pathology or bring them back toward positiveadaptation. Gene expression in learning, which comes about as a result of transactions with the environment, is perhaps the foundation upon which positiveadaptation to adversity is built. This two-dimensional construct implies two judgments: one about a positiveadaptation and the other about the significance of risk (or adversity).
