Thus, we conclude that an increase in cesarean section rate does not imply lower perinatalmortality or lower rate of asphyxia. In a study of 2774 tested high risk patients (17,429 tests) the uncorrected perinatalmortality was 7% overall. The associations between occupation (excluding 'others') and perinatalmortality and its components are all highly significant. Studies have shown that elevated levels of glycaemia are associated with increased perinatalmortality. It is usually assumed in the medical literature that improving maternal and perinatalmortality rates are the result of changes in obstetric practice. Perinatalmortality rates have decreased in recent decades while there has been an upward trend in cesarean section rates. These results describe the lowest perinatalmortality rate achieved in a tested high risk population. The role of pharmacological treatment is unclear, certainly with respect to its in-uence on perinatalmortality. However, it does not differ significantly from zero except in one period (perinatalmortality, 1992). Available data suggest that the cesarean section rate does not contribute much to explaining the variation in perinatalmortality (2). They concluded that almost one-quarter of the observed decline in perinatalmortality rate was caused by the change in the maternal age-parity distribution of births. This communication deals with prenatal mortality in biological terms of overall reproductive efficiency and not in the clinical context of trying to reduce perinatalmortality. The results showed a new perinatalmortality rate of 35 per 1000. Clinically, this is extremely important, since classically monochorionic-monoamniotic twins have an associated perinatalmortality as high as 50% for both twins. Among the socioeconomic factors, perinatalmortality is significantly related with the three characteristics considered, religion (slightly), family income and occupation of father. Several studies have confirmed this finding and failed to show a strong correlation between cesarean section rate and perinatalmortality. In addition, there is some evidence from the later data that perinatalmortality is higher than national expectation, even after making allowance for multiplicity. The fluctuation in perinatalmortality rates over time may reflect changes in the ascertainment of deaths, with 1993 representing particularly poor reporting of deaths.
