The above representations of food and consumption did more than simply play up the notion of human difference at the expense of an imagined and abstracted internationalist community. Different geopolitical positions, different traditions of foreign policy and different parliamentarian political patterns caused the internationalist elites of the three states to respond to this new challenge very differently.
