Our conceptualisation goes beyond interactions with services and includes links within the informalsupport network. The second body of research concerns the normative ties that link formal and informalsupport networks. The findings reflect the importance of informalsupport to older people, even those who also receive formal support. Collaborative learning may encourage the formation of peer groups, each one providing an informalsupport mechanism. One out of four therefore must rely entirely on young children or people living elsewhere for informalsupport. Table 2 summarises the characteristics of subjects by the availability of informalsupport. The term ' network' implies that two or more people are involved in providing informalsupport. Neighbour-focused and restricted network types were characterised by fewer informalsupport resources at their disposal than the other types. In this section, we focus only on the informalsupport network. It makes the case for an integrated approach to the explanation of the various combinations of formal and informalsupport that are found. Six informalsupport network constellations were identified by applying cluster analysis to key criterion variables that reflect the inter-personal milieu. Small overlaps may also indicate that authorities ration services, and primarily help the frailest old people and those without family or other informalsupport. A well-functioning formal and informalsupport network allows individuals to maintain autonomy in old age, even when they have to depend on help from others. To conclude, the majority of the older people perceived their informalsupport network as vital to their lives.
