This is the spirit in which ecologicaleconomics has developed, and there is an enormous amount to be said for it. In relation to this, environmental economics basically remains an economic discipline, whereas ecologicaleconomics is more geared towards interdisciplinary research and action. One can argue that ecologicaleconomics is as old as economics itself. Even so, his fundamental criticism of ecologicaleconomics, as of environmental economics, is that it is instrumentalist. Environmental and resource economics can be seen as a sub-field in economics, but ecological economics originates from a strong disappointment with the economics profession. In fact, ecologicaleconomics has provided us with much insight into the nature of those allocation failures that arise from malfunctioning markets. More usually within ecologicaleconomics, carrying capacity is defined in terms of exceeding limits-to be set by ecological criteria. For these reasons, we argue that resilience, whilst attractive from an ecologicaleconomics standpoint, has, at the moment, little to offer for the development of indicators. He rightly recognises that ecologicaleconomics is superior to neoclassical environmental economics in that it takes a wider view of the issues at stake, focusing specifically on vital ecosystems. Sagoff makes some telling criticisms of this approach but does not recognise that it has already been subjected to extensive criticism from within ecologicaleconomics. As noted earlier, much ecologicaleconomics begins with the observation that prices in a decentralized economic environment often do not reflect social scarcities of goods and services. In this latter regard, the paper is currently guilty of imposing higher costs than are necessary, by being written in a language designed for insiders in the ecologicaleconomics literature. Things get worse when we join the typically strongly non-linear dynamics of ecological systems with the economic dynamics and interact them in a proper treatment of ecologicaleconomics. It is small wonder that ecologicaleconomics remains a fringe activity of what one could call 'official' economics. Above all, it is important that aid should encourage the trend to ecologicaleconomics—economics which are sustainable and which encourage sustainability.
