The individual areastudies address common themes concerning the appointment and responsibilities of municipal employees and the creation and diffusion of professional values and identities. Rather, the old, single framework version of areastudies that focused on the static lines and boundaries between "peoples", "cultures", and "civilizations" has become outdated. As an antidote to the theoretical barrenness of areastudies, the author offers the following argument. It is no secret to this audience that severe questions have been raised in recent years about the usefulness of areastudies. Such calls have been heeded and indeed there has been a flood of small areastudies. Ironically, it is in the ' production of new facts ' - the curse of areastudies ! They speak to each other and to broader social theory and areastudies concerns in multiple ways. The book provides a good example of why theoretical engagement is necessary for accurate inquiry in areastudies research. What struck me about the articles and reviews in this issue, however, was how little they resembled the caricature painted of areastudies by its critics. What is needed is a new, alternative areastudies that imposes a less narrow view of the world, one that is more in tune with contemporary global realities. European areastudies sounds strangely anomalous. The individual growth areastudies looked at the long term sustainable growth options within each area.
