Favorable figures on trade or the purchase of consumer durables will drive up the stock market, or rather (to be precise) the stock indexes. Lagged durables and possibly lagged nondurables are significant, with coefficients consistent with habit persistence. Yet, purchases of durables are an important aspect of variations in the intermediation process and the model should be expanded to include this feature. Yet in the 1920s more and more of the common symbols of material progress were mechanical consumer durables. Our results support the analysis of nondurables and services as a group without the inclusion of durables. Instead, it was deemed normal that youngsters spend their money on clothes, entertainment or consumer durables, or that they should save for marriage. Also, durables are never separable from nondurables and services, as some of the existing literature has assumed. However, nondurables and services are separable from durables, although not vice versa. The next three hypotheses examine the possibility that durables are separable from nondurables and services. Instead, respondents were asked about the consumer durables owned by the household, such as radio, television, car, bicycle, farming animal and the like. He also found that people invest in fixed assets and consumer durables in order to reduce their income transfers. However, one can argue that the omission of consumer durables may be inappropriate when studying longer-horizon returns. Rather, agents derive utility from the service flow derived from the stock of consumer durables. Abandoned furniture and consumer durables were a sign of the rapid turnover of residents. If one wants to include durables, however, our separability tests reject forming a single aggregate of durable goods. Prices for nondurables and services are readily available in the official statistics, but proper prices for durables are not. We need the user cost of durables, but official statistics report only the sale prices for new durables. The relevant price for the stock of durables is the user cost, which involves expectations about future prices of the goods in question. This result is a bit odd in that it implies that consumers display habit persistence in durables but not in nondurables and services. Disaggregated data are not available for durables goods as no relevant depreciation rates are published. A first level of spending by a young householder or potential householder is directed towards consumer durables. If the durable good depreciates quickly enough, the distinction between durables purchases and the durables stock becomes less important as the horizon lengthens. Those households owning more consumer durables report lower recent fertility. Consumer durables, as relatively affordable portable property associated with marriage and domestic life, stand between these two extreme forms. This result implies that nondurables and services can be analyzed together as a group independently of durables, but not vice versa. These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
