Seed dispersal patterns produced by white-faced monkeys: implications for the dispersallimitation of neotropical tree species. We propose that insect dispersallimitation is one likely factor. This raises questions over the degree to which seed dispersallimitation may hinder secondary forest succession. Dispersallimitation was detected for both early and late-successional species. We assumed k was constant across stations within a site, a characterization of the average degree of dispersallimitation, topography and other features of a given site. For these species, the scale of patchiness in the critical resource (in this case light) corresponds approximately to the scale of patchiness determined by dispersallimitation in other species. These results contradict the species equivalence and environmental homogeneity assumptions behind the neutral theory of biodiversity, and hence question the prominence of dispersallimitation processes in short-term forest dynamics. Less dispersallimitation could result from uniformity of dispersal syndromes among species combined with a limited but effective set of extant dispersers. Hence, the way environmental control, broad-scale historical contingencies, and local dispersal limitation act to control landscape-scale species distributions of tropical forest plant species appear to vary idiosyncratically among species.
