Our study compared the efficacy and safety of prophylactic treatment with digoxin and amiodarone. These infants were all treated with antiarrhythmic drugs, including digoxin and amiodarone. The patient developed major respiratory problems with retention of carbon dioxide despite endotracheal intubation and treatment with diuretics and digoxin. Routine treatment with digoxin was performed in the majority of the cases, with diuretics in a few of them and with vasodilators in one. No fetal response to digoxin was noted at 72 hours, and repeat fetal ultrasonography showed worsening pleural effusions. Six of the 7 patients were treated with digoxin and diuretics and eventually were discharged home. Clinically significant interactions occur with digoxin and with other liver-metabolized drugs. One patient with atrial flutter alternating with fibrillation required digoxin to control rapid ventricular rate. Studies with warfarin, digoxin and cimetidine have not shown any problems. At 16 years of age, a routine 24-h tape showed runs of non-sustained ventricular tachycardia so digoxin was stopped. Treatment was continued with digoxin, diuretics and nifedipine (one case) and captopril (two cases). She was given digoxin for management of congestive heart failure and referred for surgery. At two years of age, she was commenced on treatment with digoxin and furosemide. Fetal dosages of digoxin and propafenone never did reach therapeutic levels. Supraventricular tachycardia (rate 250/min) was noted preoperatively and treatment with digoxin and subsequently amiodarone was given which controlled the arrhythmia. Potentiation of warfarin-induced anticoagulation, and elevation of lithium, digoxin and theophylline levels necessitates close monitoring. All patients were in normal sinus rhythm and were discharged on oral digoxin and frusemide. Congestive failure was controlled with digoxin and diuretics. The drug digoxin is used for heart conditions. In the nonhydropic group, 6 received a single drug (5 digoxin and 1 sotalol) and 2 multiple. This criticism could also be made, nonetheless, of the use by the authors of digoxin. The patient was treated with digoxin and furosemide. These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
