Leaves on most dicot trees withered and fell within two days after the storm. Eight dicot species germinated from the 1-d post-burn soils and 13 from the 1-y post-burn soils. All except one of the 72 pre-burn soil samples (99%) contained germinating dicot seed and 40 (56%) contained germinating monocot seed. However, 10% of the dicot seedlings from the reference forest died before they could be identified. Thirty-three per cent of these species were dicot herbs; 14% of the seedlings were shrubs/small trees and tree species. Weeds were either pooled as one group, or separated into dicots and monocots. In 1994, reference forest soils produced 422 seedlings (703 seeds m-2), 368 (87%) dicots and 54 (13%) monocots. Therefore, monocots are better able to deal with the typical water stressed habitat of the lowland canopy than dicots. Thus, in both monocot and dicot seeds, loss of dormancy was associated with a reduction in the threshold oxygen percentage. Unidentified species (monocot and dicot classes comprising 13.5% of the emerged seeds) were excluded from the analyses. Ten per cent of the dicot seedlings from the reference forest died before they could be identified. The reference forest soils and the pre-burn soils each produced 30 dicot species. Nonetheless, the clear differences between most dicot seeds and the cereals are consistent between the two methods. Using the year total pollinators as an example (fig. 4), numbers were positively related to dicots, with no effect of herbicide management. Only 2.6% of the seedlings were dicot herbs; while no vines, small trees/shrubs or trees germinated. These soils had 18 dicot species in common and had the highest similarity index, 0.43; six of the shared species were dicot herbs. Interrupting yield depression in monoculture corn: comparative effectiveness of grasses and dicots. The year total pollinators were found to be positively related to dicots. A total of 2101 seedlings (3503 seeds m-2) germinated from the 1-y post-burn pasture soils, 74 (4%) dicots and 2027 (96%) monocots. Only 14 of the 72 1-day post-burn soils (19%) contained germinating dicot seed, and none contained germinating monocot seed. Only dicot species were used in this analysis because monocot seedlings were not identified by species. At each site, at the time of ignition, moisture contents of graminoids, litter, herbaceous dicots, wood debris and soils were determined on a dry weight basis. The reference forest and the pre-burn soils had 18 dicot species in common and the highest similarity index, 0.43; six of the shared species were herbs. A transplant experiment confirmed that for at least one large-seeded species of dicot, seedlings are negatively affected by the reduction in light availability and increase in leaf litter.
