Controls reporting a diarrhoealillness in the 3 weeks prior to interview were excluded. In developing countries, waterborne diarrhoealillness continues to be a leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Nineteen persons (1.0 % of respondents) with chronic diarrhoealillness were excluded. Individuals were excluded if they were immunocompromised, had a chronic diarrhoealillness or were on long-term antibiotic therapy. Nevertheless, the results of this study indicate that the health burden associated with gastrointestinal pathogens may be underestimated if only diarrhoealillness is accounted for. The incidence rates for diarrhoealillness among the population surveyed, both cluster-wise and overall, for adults, male, and female children were calculated. Of the 20 cases with a diarrhoealillness, abdominal pain (19) and blood in the stools (18) were the most common features. In equation (1), diarrhoealillness has been regressed on a set of explanatory variables. The causes of diarrhoealillness involve both the household and the public sector as a provider of a public good, namely water supplies. There was no association between illness and either previous diarrhoealillness in a household member or exposure to a child-care setting. Educational attainment of the head of the household also does not play a role among the determinants of diarrhoealillness in the estimation. The remainder of the results refer to those persons who reported diarrhoealillness. A severe diarrhoealillness will challenge the continence mechanisms of healthy people, but more particularly when there is severe disability. The source of drinking water is significant and positively related to diarrhoealillness indicating that households who are dependent on non-piped sources have a higher probability of reporting diarrhoealillness. Data describing diarrhoealillness were analysed using weighted proportions to compensate for unequal probabilities of selection and to allow for population estimates. The results also confirm the hypothesis that interruptions in water supply are a significant determinant of diarrhoealillness relative to households who do not experience such interruptions in piped supply. We found that 7 % of persons with diarrhoealillness took antibiotics for their illness, and that 32 % of them took antibiotics without a prior visit to a health-care provider.
