Servants were gradually replaced by other types of labour with work duties as crofters or different types of paid workers. Even smallholders, crofters and cottagers in freehold parishes were better off in old age than former tenant farmers on the estates. Tradition in the county maintains that depression results from loneliness in intelligent crofters. On retirement, it must have been almost impossible to muster the means of subsistence from such a house or smaller crofter's holding. Their labour duties were less onerous than those of crofters, and they were free to offer their labour in the local labour market. Analysis reveals marked and unexpected differences in fertility and marital patterns between different types of community and between land-owning farmers and landrenting crofters. In exchange for a house and some land, crofters had to provide a labour service to the landowner. For three of the estates there was a considerable difference between farmers, on the one hand, and crofters, cottagers and smaller farmers on the other. In practice there were great differences between crofters who rented large land areas and crofters who had just small plots. Therefore, their situation was similar to, for instance, that of the crofters. This was particularly common among cottagers and crofters or their widows, and there might be no formal contract. While landless workers, crofters and artisans in most cases lived in small nuclear neo-local families, landholding farmers adhered to other patterns. The social situation of crofters was somewhere in-between tenants on noble land and cottagers\\lodgers. There were in all 182 farmers and crofters on the estate. Since the owner of the land almost always owned all buildings errected on it, tenant farmers, cottagers and crofters did not have any formal rights to dwellings when they retired. At that time they established themselves as farmers, if they had access to land or could lease it, or as crofters, cottagers, soldiers, craftsmen, contract workers, day-labourers and so on. The table also shows that the number of farmers and crofters who had to provide pensions does not correspond to the number who had pensioners living with them. Regarding small farmers, crofters and cotters it is reasonable to assume that pensions were so negligible that they were forced to offer their services to a farmer or estate bailiff. He was called a crofter but his estate was inventoried as no less than 7.768 kronor, and of these 6.537 were kept in a bank account. This rule applies to crofters in the same way as to other farmers.
