There are additional reasons why institutionalists should be interested in criticalrealist philosophy. But the criticalrealist takes mainstream practices as given and admittedly does not begin with explicit epistemological statements. The first section describes the criticalrealist argument against mainstream economics and the use of formal methods. For this reason alone, institutionalists should know something about criticalrealist doctrines. I found myself longing for a more pragmatic as well as programmatic, or what might be called 'criticalrealist', perspective. But, nothing in this implication of the criticalrealist argument establishes that mainstream economists actually do attempt to do this. This paper addresses a key feature of the criticalrealist program: its critique of mainstream economics. This problem may be significant, because it seems to indicate an internal conflict within the criticalrealist argument. Recalling the criticalrealist perspective, a fundamental tension between the intentions and activities of individuals and the (restraining) influence of social structures is recognised. I agree with the criticalrealist claim that such mechanical structures leave no important role for institutions or 'human agency'. This comment seems to follow from the basic criticalrealist ontology of open, morphogenic systems. A broad, multi-disciplinary literature has also been examined, and a criticalrealist perspective applied. There are other arguments that one could cite, which would further establish the relevance to institutionalism of criticalrealist arguments (and critiques of them). Nash argues that the criticalrealist notion of a demi-regularity tacitly relies upon the concept of closure. It applies a criticalrealist perspective. In the criticalrealist canon, morphogenetic systems are those that are reproduced with some modification and open systems are systems where law-like event regularities are not present. Indeed, the observation that economists make extensive use of such 'a priori' concepts could be seen as an excellent reason to reject the criticalrealist critique. A criticalrealist perspective sees scientific theories yielding partial, revisable, abstract, but referential knowledge of the world that can be expressed through metaphors and models.
