It is emphasised that criticalrealism is not a prescriptive methodology, but a research philosophy that supports several complementary methods. The purpose of the paper is to promote critical discussion regarding the role of criticalrealism in institutionalism. First, criticalrealism asserts that the complexity of social situations is such that no general laws can prescribe action for particular instances. This approach is a type of criticalrealism. Finally, criticalrealism asserts that social inquiry is not value neutral and must seek to enhance the values of justice, rationality and truth. In opposition to this practice, criticalrealism argues that the social world appears to be 'insusceptible to significant local closure' (1997: 109). It is likely that criticalrealism will play a larger role in institutionalism in the future. Fifth, criticalrealism asserts that social activity does not simply reproduce situations; it transforms them. Now in claiming that the failures of econometrics are due to the nonexistence of local closures, criticalrealism is, in other words, implying that all econometric findings are spurious correlations. In this it spans a broad spectrum of faith positions from uncompromising non-realism at one end to criticalrealism at the other.
