And, so, it is by virtue of this conceptual connection that the failure of the ontological argument is supposed to compromise the cosmologicalargument. Thus, regardless of how it is packaged, every version of the cosmologicalargument can be assessed by targeting this core structure. A cosmologicalargument should have some religious significance. Fortunately, the above cosmologicalargument can be salvaged. But the cosmologicalargument would preclude the first alternative. And, at any rate, it is a standard feature of the sort of cosmologicalargument under consideration to deny an infinite regress of this sort. Rather, my focus is on the implications of a certain sort of cosmologicalargument for which one might imagine a complete defence. But of course purveyors of the cosmologicalargument will accept that there is no physical process that is the making of the world. We present a valid deductive cosmologicalargument for the necessary existence of a powerful and intelligent creator of the actual universe. Appeal to the cosmologicalargument would be redundant if the ontological argument could be appealed to instead. But this revised principle would not lead to an infinite regress for one who accepts the cosmologicalargument. I do not want to import the cosmologicalargument into the debate at this point. So, where does this leave the cosmologicalargument? But it is just such a being that the cosmologicalargument purports to establish. It is true that the cosmologicalargument has great intuitive force and is being used to great effect by proponents of intelligent design. The cosmologicalargument, however, does not strictly entail that these terms be used in this way. Clearly, neither (i) nor (ii) will work for a proponent of the cosmologicalargument. There is nothing here, for example, which compromises the cosmologicalargument, since it does not depend upon our being able to identify goods and distinguish them from evils. However, the failure of the ontological argument, instead of undermining the cosmologicalargument, rather liberates it from the dependency it would have if the ontological argument were a success. This brings him closer to discussions typical of the ontological argument (in its modal forms at least) than to the cosmologicalargument and the argument from design.
