Thus, this preparation may avoid the thromboembolic risk which has been associated with oestrogen-containing oral contraceptives. From all the studies mentioned, a reasonable interpretation would be that oral contraceptives present no major teratogenic hazard. It also appears likely that the increase in risk from oral contraceptives is less than that from prescribed hormonal drugs or pregnancy tests. A more definite judgment would require a special analysis of the inter-relations between the ethnic factor, the other sociocultural identification variables and the contraceptive data. Looking first at equation 1, both year of first intercourse and age at first intercourse were positively related to use of contraceptives at first intercourse. The use of contraceptives was common on the first occasion of intercourse with nearly half of the women relying on the sheath. High standards of contraceptive practice were also found during the study period. However, if the physician considered that the method of choice was not suited to a woman, she was advised to accept an alternative contraceptive. The percentage of users of injectable contraceptives who reported themselves as amenorrhoeic is not unusually high. To the best of our knowledge, none of these mechanisms has been previously studied in connection with contraceptive failure. Secondly, and as conceded by the authors, any role of oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy remains to be examined in future studies. Further, unlike fecundability, the age-specific fertility rates are not affected perfectly in proportion to the effectiveness of the contraceptive used.
