All six cases identified arose in visitors to the area, and most had very limited exposure to the contaminatedwater. This is an imprecise way to assess occurrence of disease through contaminatedwater exposure because there is substantial bias due to differing perception of symptoms. It is not clear whether the risk in this study is due to direct contact with contaminatedwater or indirect contact with peers or elders. Contaminatedwater not only affects humans but can profoundly alter ecosystems, suggesting again a complex and wide-ranging web of reverberations. A possible explanation may be that the contaminatedwater reached different households at different times, probably reflecting low contamination levels in the water. It could be assumed that a first wave of cases due to contaminatedwater was followed by some cases due to person-to-person contamination. These could be coincidental cases, but at least for campylobacter, transmission through contaminatedwater is also possible. Again this suggests that contaminatedwater supplies may be a source of infection. Furthermore, use of multiple water sources may increase the likelihood of exposure to contaminatedwater. Enteroviruses are suspected, but not proven, to spread via recreational waters, probably by swallowing contaminatedwater. Noroviruses are often responsible for foodborne outbreaks due to contaminatedwater, ready-to-eat dishes, seafood, fruits and vegetables. Although the association with showering was weak, the effect of using nonpotable contaminatedwater on gastroenteritis needs to be investigated further. The transmission routes (person-to-person, contaminatedwater, food or environment) were categorized in analogy to the outbreak classification scheme used. This was due to its low-lying elevation and problems with contaminatedwater. The epidemic curve in this outbreak strongly suggests a point-source outbreak and that exposure to contaminatedwater lasted only 1-3 days. Exposure to contaminatedwater via these mechanisms is unequal based on socioeconomic status, geography, and other characteristics. These examples are from corpora and from sources on the web.
