There may also be ways in which the small effects of an evidence-based consumerguide could be enhanced. Participants rated the evidence-based consumerguide as more useful than the control brochure. Table 1 shows the ratings given of the consumerguide and the control brochure at followup. It can be seen that the consumerguide was rated more favorably in general. We report here a large community-based randomized controlled trial of the effects of this consumerguide. Participants were mailed either an evidence-based consumerguide to treatments for depression or, as a control, a general brochure on depression. However, there were trends towards greater improvement in the consumerguide group. A related weakness is the high dropout rate for individuals enrolled in the trial (37 % for the consumerguide and 41 % for the control brochure). The response rate at 6 months was similar in the consumerguide and control pamphlet groups (63.2 % v. 58.9 %). Although the effect of a minimal intervention like a consumerguide might be small, it is not necessarily inconsequential from a population health viewpoint. It is possible that participants with a low level of symptoms may not have been motivated to try the treatments recommended in the consumerguide. However, there was only weak evidence for an effect on symptoms and disability, with only non-significant trends to greater improvement in the group receiving the consumerguide. Those receiving the consumerguide were more likely to report that they took action, mainly of the self-help type, and that they gave advice to others. Given these trends, it is possible that the effect of the consumerguide is very small and that a much larger sample size is required to detect it.
