Coding was conducted by two coders, blind to group membership, who were trained to 90% agreement on all categories. Coders were trained to reliability using selected video recorded free-play episodes that had been previously coded by criterion coders. All transcripts were scored independently by two coders who had previously been trained with this system. Two different trained coders rated all of the children's responses separately for the drawing and the playing scenarios. Ten percent of all utterances were re-coded by the first author and a point-by-point comparison was made with a second coder. A third coder rated videotapes when scores differed by more than 2 points. Transcripts that were difficult to score were reviewed by both coders and resolved by conference. Disagreements were resolved in favor of the primary coder. Disagreements were resolved by the more experienced coder reviewing the videotape. Two independent coders performed a pilot test on thirty randomly selected articles. Although disorganized attachment behavior is necessarily difficult to observe and often subtle, many researchers have managed to become reliable coders. To ensure reliability, 10 % of the adjective utterances from a random sample of transcripts were coded independently by a fourth coder. Reliability between two different coders was then obtained by recoding independently 20 % of the samples from each group. The 24- and 42month assessments were videotaped and rated for several parenting behaviors by trained coders. The inspection devices can rotate by being driven by a motor, and the position information can be obtained with a photoelectric switch and coder wheel. Three coders searched the transcripts for justifications and identified both the justification statements and the source statements that they justified. A randomly selected 30 % of all interactions were independently coded and reliability checked by two trained coders. A second coder independently coded all gaze indices to establish the degree of interrater reliability. In part the coding rules controlled for this possibility by explicitly instructing the coder to ignore negative comments that the text was dated. This time lag eliminated the coder's awareness of individual children's original attachment classifications. The reliability coders followed the same guidelines as the original coders and were instructed to not consult and/or discuss the coding with each other. The coder then generates programming code, based on the model sets. The coders received training, specific coding instructions and a detailed codebook. Two coders, blind to diary data and foster parent attachment classification, rated each tape. The second coder then coded nine transcripts (three for each age group).
