And finally, what purposes (psychological, social, cultural) does such canonformation serve? Inter-organisational arrangements that make popular culture products available to a widespread audience (embracing both critics and fans) are therefore vital to the canonformation process. But canonformation is not only a question concerning various formulations of historical knowledge. Occasionally, other than 'purely' state-governed issues may insinuate themselves into the prescribed canonformation. As noted in relation to alternative canonformation, there are other ways than just the history book to distribute statements about music. This kind of collection of famous names and precious pieces of music can be seen as the backbone of modern music historiography and canonformation. We suggest, therefore, that such organisational processes making available certain works and not others, shade, if not constrain, choices that result in canonformation. The unstable power relations implied by the juxtaposition of different canons are considered, as well as the cumulative aspect of canonformation. The contrast between 'guidelines' and 'influences' suggests that there might be sufficient base for a distinction between 'political' and 'alternative' canonformation. There is no reason for me to suspect that canonformation would not also work in the same manner in the context of popular music. The cumulative aspect of canonformation, especially in relation to the mainstream, needs to be emphasised in this context, too. This points to a still central aspect of canonformation, namely the media through which historical knowledge is transmitted. Rauta-aika is, however, quite educating in respect to some central elements of alternative canonformation. Whereas in the case of mainstream canonformation this process can be characterised at least partially by subtlety, in this case the marginalisation is rather coercive. Marable's elegantly structured anthology is not devoted to canonformation. In both cases, it is interesting to note how the actions taken by the oppressed musical minority are clearly in an alignment with the processes of alternative canonformation. The case of tango is also a peculiar one in respect of prescribed canonformation, and especially in relation to the problematics of national identity in (popular) music.
