Although this was an exploratory study with very few subjects, the implication is that a proficient bilingualreader may be able to transfer reading acquisition skills across languages.
Occasionally, however, the less skilled bilingual readers performed better than their monolingual counterparts, especially in phonologically related tasks such as spelling.
In the working memory task the only difference was the advantage the less skilled bilingual readers had over their monolingual counterparts.
More recently, this same letter detection pattern has been observed for bilingual readers confronting interlingual homographs such as the aforementioned "pour".
