Affective researchers have also proposed that each basicemotion is associated with a characteristic facial expression. However, basicemotion words such as "happy" and "angry" to a great extent are used to describe and not to express emotions. In contrast to pain, each basicemotion serves as a general-purpose motivational system, with a virtually limitless variety of activators and associated behavioral responses. For example, the specificity of causes for, and behavioral responses to, pain is much greater than that for any basicemotion. Basicemotion theorists have primarily explored the behavioral and expressive manifestations of emotion. A pattern of pain and basicemotion expressions in response to injury provide an adaptive advantage over a pain expression alone. I interpret basicemotion expressions that occur contemporaneously with pain expression as representing separate but highly interactive systems, each with distinct adaptive functions. Moreover, basicemotion theory is largely incompatible with recent findings in behavioral genetics and temperament research. Such a conceptual framework suggests that we consider the possibility of distinctly different adaptive functions for both pain and basicemotion expressions in response to painful stimulation.
